In 1962 all women’s organizations of the United Church were invited to join as one group in each church. This was due to the overlapping of services provided by several women’s groups in the churches. They became known as the United Church Women. At the national level they are known as the Women’s Missionary Network under the division of Faith, Formation and Education.
Previous to 1962 the two main groups were the Women’s Missionary Society, and the Women’s Association. The Women’s Missionary Society sponsored the Baby Band, the Mission Band, the C.G.I.T. and the Lettie Allen Rush Auxiliary. The Women’s Association sponsored the Evening Guild and the Unity Group.
The General U.C.W. oversees all activities with the monthly executive meeting. The main fundraising activities are the Bazaar in November and the Geranium Coffee Break and Bake Sale in May, as well as catering for special events. An organized committee serves lunches after funerals, if requested. Support is given to many charitable organizations as well as special projects initiated by the Church Council.
